The most popular beaches of Cartagena are: Bocagrande, Castillogrande and La Boquilla may not coincide with the white sands and aquamarine waters of the Rosario islands because their sand is of volcanic origin, but they are undoubtedly a great attraction.
La Boquilla: La Boquilla offers a more authentic local experience, where beach action can be broken up with some baseball in the barrio or a scenic voyage through the mangroves s is also popular in La Boquilla.
Bocagrande and Castillogrande in these beach locals show their culture, they offer different fun services such as, water sports, tents and beach chairs, live music and most important the delicious and authentic typical food at the edge of the beach, also you can so Packing a picnic and grab a few cold Aguila´s beers (Frias) to toast the sunset in Bocagrande or Castillogrande
It’s time to live the best experience in the Rosario Islands, these island have the Rosario name´s because They have a rosary ( Religious Ornament from catholic faith )shape if you look at them from the sky, so enjoy a relaxing day at Isla Grande located at the southern of the Corales del Rosario National Natural Park, just 45 minutes from the city of Cartagena. Isla Grande is one of the biggest in the collection of 27 island,Some of the islands are private islands, others are for locals only and of course, some are there for tourist to visit.
The Rosario Islands are predominantly uninhabited islands located between one hour and two hours boat ride off the coast of Cartagena. Isla Grande is one of the few islands with locals living there, giving it a community which provides visitors with somewhere to explore and experience the culture.
The Rosario Islands are an integral part of one of Colombia’s most important national parks, and the only park in the country that is primarily underwater. As such, the islands and surrounding waters are remarkably well preserved and protected, meaning that you can enjoy their wonders as nature intended.
The seafood available on the islands is about as good and as fresh as any you’re likely to find in Colombia, and it’s so plentiful that you even get fisherman anchoring their boats alongside yours to sell you some fresh-out-of-the-sea lobster or shellfish.
In the Rosario Island you can find the oceanarium ( to go there is optional) is located on Isla San Martin de Pajarales, one of the 27 islands that make up the 120,000 hectares of the National and Natural Park Corales del Rosario and San Bernardo.
It is one of the best places to know and find the wonders that rest in our sea.
Inside the Oceanarium you can enjoy a spectacle of dolphins that dance, jump, greet and make the public amuse. In addition, you can meet sea turtles and nurse sharks.
Isla Barú, located just off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia, is the kind of tropical paradise that most visitors to Cartagena envision when they book their tickets. Palm trees, bright blue Caribbean sea, sandy beaches, fresh seafood and fruit juice… heaven, basically.
It´s a beautiful long white sand beach with crystal clear, turquoise coloured water. There is a long strip with many bars, backpacker style restaurants, hostels and beach life. People’s goal in life is to chill by the beach all day, sipping away at some rum and coke, beer or coconut water, taking an afternoon nap on a hammock and getting a tan.
Playa Blanca is on Isla Baru, and Isla Baru is a man-made part of the Rosario islands. The island itself was created when a huge navigation ditch was made and it was cut from the mainland over 300 years ago by the Spanish. Its still part of the Rosario Islands national park and is counted as one of the Rosario islands.
If you want a nice and peaceful night away from Cartagena then we suggest spending the night at Playa Blanca. During the morning and evening periods, there will be very few other tourists and you will feel like you have the whole beach to yourself. There are a variety of accommodation options for all budgets.
In addition to the amazing parties, Cholon Island also becomes the perfect place for those who are looking to spend their weekend surrounded by the beautiful and crystalline waters of the Caribbean Sea and the breathtaking sunsets, since the daily tropical sun of this island make it ideal for those who want to sunbathe and later have fun in the sea.
Cholon Island, located within the Rosario and San Bernardo Corals National Park, has become a must-see for adventure lovers; since a few meters from the seashore, tourists can find the Colombia’s largest coral reef, which allows all kinds of sports and aquatic activities.
Cholon is the ideal Island to celebrate birthdays, bachelor(ette) parties or just spend all day reading a book and relaxing on the beach while contemplating the immensity of the sea.
Fort San Bernardo is located on the island of Tierra Bomba. It was built in the seventeenth century with the Fort San Jose to protect Cartagena from pirates and control the entry of merchant ships. For some time it was also used as a prison due to their inaccessibility and great security. Tierra Bomba is now a fishing village and has a variety of beaches, restaurants and places to buy souvenirs.
In the Fort San Fernando you can learn about the history behind the balwarts in the Northern front, known as King and Queen. There you can find a wide variety of old cannons, cisterns, awnings and watchtowers made of stone.
From there, you can enjoy a stunning sight of Tierra Bomba island. Nearby, you will find El Horno hill, where is located the Battery Angel San Rafael. It is surrounded by a dry ditch and other buildings from the colonial times.
Up there you will find an underground tunnel connected with the Battery of Santa Barbara, another historical spot that is worth visiting.
Beyond the old buildings, there are plenty of beaches in Tierra Bomba, such as Palmarito and Playa Linda, two amazing places to rest and swim in the pristine sea waters. You can also tour all over the island and enjoy its excellent food and drinks.
